The best local walks on the Isle of Wight
1. Yarmouth-Needles-Freshwater circular route | 12 miles | 4½-6 hours
There are stunning views on this extremely varied walk following the coastal path anti-clockwise to Totland, the Needles, Tennyson Downs and Freshwater Bay. As you descend into Colwell Bay, the coastal path directs you away from the coast and onto the main road. But unless the ttide is high you can walk along the shoreline at Colwell Bay instead.
When you reach the car park at Needles Amusement Park, you could shorten the walk by climbing up the downs, or by talking the footpath east at the bottom of the downs, but you will miss some spectacular views.
At Freshwater Bay follow the footpath opposite the Albion Hotel (Coastguard Lane) until you reach another road (Blackbridge Road). Turn right on this road and the footpath continues about 50m on the left. When you reach Afton Road (the Co-op), cross over and continue until you reach the old railway track to the west of River Yar. This takes you back to Yarmouth.

2. Circular walk around the River Yar | 5 miles | 2-2½ hours
A lovely circular walk along both sides of the River Yar. Walk towards Yarmouth, and once you're over the bridge turn right just before the sailing club, following the path along the river (the old railway line). After about 45 minutes you should arrive at a small bridge. Cross it and continue to the Red Lion. Take the footpath next to the church until you come to Kings Manor Farm, follow the road straight ahead and look for signs for the footpath back to Yarmouth. You should end up on Gas Works Lane, where you turn left, There's a footpath a little way ahead turning left, which takes you to Halletts Shute and Westhill Lane, back the cottages.

3. Newtown Creek and Shalfleet | 8 miles | 3-4 hours
A fabulously secluded walk along woodland cliffs and through a nature reserve where you might see white-tailed sea eagles. Walk to Yarmouth and follow the High St (next to Harveys) to Yarmouth Green, where you walk along the sea wall to the end, then up into the car park at Bouldnor.
Walk a short distance along the main road until you reach a footpath on the left hand side, then follow all signs for the Isle of Wight coastal path. Look out for sea eagles at the mouth of Newtown River, especially at high tide early morning or late afternoon when they'll be fishing. An hour later you will emerge at the main road to Newport just before Shalfleet. Bus number 7 will take you back to Yarmouth, either from the Warlands Lane bus stop, or the New Inn bus stop. Timetables can be found at the Southern Vectis website.
